Reed Reeds

The basi victim is attacked in her home. Tied to her bed. Forced to watch each unspeakable act of remorseless cruelty – but unable to scream. The second murder is even more twisted. Signed, sealed, and delivered with a message for the police, stuffed in the victim’s throat. A fractured nursery rhyme that ends with a warning: ‘There will be more’. For detective Jack Murphy, it’s more than a threat. It’s a personal invitation to play. And no one plays rougher than Jack. Especially when the killer’s pawns are the people he loves…

“If you want something you’ve never had before, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done before.” – Drina Reed

This is a very powerful quote. The quote is inspirational, but likewise very scary. Is the inspiration sufficient to make you win a victory over the fear? Change is difficult enough, but doing something that not only involves changing, but also doing something totally new is a challenge that some people can not accept. Others hug alter and are always looking for the next best thing.

If you are reading this article, possibly it’s because you are ready to change something in your life. Maybe you don’t even know where to start. It is one thing to say you need to do something you have never done, it is rather another to figure out what that “something” is. The original step is to figure out what it is want to change. Just saying you are not happy with your life is not good enough. You have to narrow it down. Is your income not where you would like it be? Are you tired of your occupation or the persons you work with? The way you look?

Once you have figured out what you are not happy with, the second step is to narrow it down even farther. If you are not happy with your income, where would you like your income to be? If you are tired of your job, why are you tired of it? What would you like to do instead? If you don’t like the way you look, what don’t you like?

The third and final step is the hard part. You have to do this step with the idea that anything you come up with possible. You will have to work out the details, but it is possible. If you are not happy with your income and you have decisive that you would like to double your income, how may you make that happen? Maybe you need more education, even if you have never gone to college or you have been out of school for a long time. Maybe you didn’t even finish high school. What would it take to get the education you need? If you are tired of your job, what would you need to do to change jobs? Have you started looking for something else? Are you attempting to get a occupation in a field you have never worked in? What do you need to convince somebody to hire you in that field? If you don’t like the way you look, what don’t you like? If it is your weight, are you more than willing to undertake an exercise program you have never tried before? Are you more than willing to learn to eat differently? If it is your hair are you more than willing to try coloring it?

There are unquestionably some changes are scarier than others. Some require more effort than others. Some have the potential for more negative aftermaths than others. Changing your hair color is not that big of a commitment-it will grow out, but enrolling in school may be a significant financial and personal risk. No one may make you change, but altering may be the divergence amongst living and existing.

4You will stop reading only to sporadically ascertain that the doors are locked and that your children are safely tucked away

Rick Reed is more than a former police detective who has written a novel regarding serial murders. He is a former police detective who investigated a group of serial killings and brought the perpetrator to justice. That would be sufficient to establish his bona fides in regards to his subject matter. Add to the mix the fact that he may write in an outstanding manner well, and you have a winner of a debut novel.

4I actually liked this book
By Kay Sargent
I in truth enjoyed this book. Good pacing and it read quickly, and yes, I had disturb putting it down til it was finished and then I looked for it galore more. So I am sure I will read the next sequel to Jack Murphy and his detective collaborator Liddell the Cajun. The murders are gruesome, but aren’t they all? There is a good deal of humor and the uninterrupted ribbing is believable as stress relief and a heap of of the more prominent than life characters. The detectives and procedures seem very creditable to me. (I did see there is one review arguing where the Ohio River joins the Mississippi but I live in the Pacific NW and can’t comment on that.)

Before I read the book I thought it sounds like an episode from Criminal Minds (a TV show that I enjoy) but his book is more involved and delightfully longer than a TV episode would be and I would look forward to seeing Rick Reed’s The Cruelist Cut made into a full length movie. (I see it being kind of like the movie Seven but with characters like Robert Deniro/Robert duvall who acted in The Black Dahlia or their current counter parts as Jack & Liddell).
