The fishin Hole Blue Smelt Recipe: Hooks- Mustad 3366 sz4 Tandem wire- Sevalon nylon coated wire 27# test Thread- Rumpf prewaxed White 8/0 Tail & wing flash- Polar Flash #2002 or similar blue hue flash Wing- White Bucktail, Blue Bucktail, 2-3 peacock herl Body- White polydub, Medium smooth silver tinsel Instructions: Clamp the eye of one hook in your vise of in a pair of needlenose and gently bend the eye of the trailing hook up to in regards to a 30 to 40 degree angle. Measure out regarding 3 – 3.5 inches of wire and snip with wirecutters. Feed wire in through trailing hook until it reaches just in front of bend. Cover wire on top with a lot of wraps of thread. Measure and tie in a polar flash tail. Whip finish. Start thread again and fetch to rear of the hook , just in front of tail. Tie in in regards to 4 inches of white poly dub and silver tinsel. fetch thread to eye. Wrap forward and bind in polydub then open spiral tinsel forward. Put leading hook into vise. Measure wire length and cut so that wire will end in regards to 1/8 inch behind eye. With Trailing tandem held straight up and behind wrap galore times, the entire length of wire. Whip finish. With thin CA or superglue lightly cover wire, let arid thoroughly. Re-start thread and wind to rear of leading hook. Bind in 4″ of polydub, and 3″ silver tinsel. Next add in a sparse bunch of white bucktail that will extend to or just past trailing hook. bind on approx 5-8 strands of polar flash. Lightly coat with thin head cement. Bind in sparse bunch of blue bucktail, then top with peacock herl. Continue wrapping until a smooth even head is formed whip finish with 5 twists. and head cement. Paint head with white enamel, dry, then paint on red dot on each side (eyes). Cast or troll this unbelievable fly for salmon or trout. Bass have also shown a great deal of interest in this fly. We have found this fly to be particularly effective in Segago Lake here in Windham Maine where the smelts seem to have a slight purple or blue tinge in their color. Will most likely do well in any body of water where game fish are hunting for Smelts.
