Take good care of your saxophone and it will return the favor. Every time you are done playing your saxophone for any significant amount of time there are a few things you ought to do. You must always run numerous type of cloth or rag through the mouthpiece and the neck. It is very primary that these pieces stay free from feed and gunk buildup. The mouthpiece and neck will get a build up rather speedily of anything that comes shooting out of your mouth. When this builds up on the sides of the mouthpiece and neck it genuinely changes the shape of the inside. This can, over time, change the way the instrument plays. It will not be an betterment either! It is so easy to do, yet so a good deal of young players neglect this. You will have to always rinse out your mouth if you eat food, or drink sugary drinks before you play. The feed that is stuck in your teeth and mouth will come right back out into your saxophone.

The next thing to worry with regards to is the body of the sax. You ought to run a cleaning cloth through the body of the instrument starting at the bell. Put the little weighted string in the bell, stuff the string and rag into the bell, and tip the saxophone over and pull the weight through the sax and out the other end. Do this with the neck and mouthpiece removed. Run the cloth through assorted times. You may buy kits from a music store for this purpose. If you look down the instrument where the neck attaches, you’ll detect one little key that sticks out. Sometimes the cleaning cloth will get stuck on this, and you’ll have to push it back in with a stick of a good deal of sort, and then undertake pulling it out again. If you pull too hard, the string may break off and it will be more difficult to remove. The next step is to polish the outside of the instrument. This is finelooking much intended to keep it looking nice. I personally never polish my saxophone. I do however, ALWAYS clean the inside.

A couple of indispensable things you may do. NEVER place your instrument in water, and never let it get wet! The pads are made out of leather, and will turn hard if you let them get wet. The saliva from your mouth is OK. Sometimes pads get too wet and will turn hard. In a case like this you may buy a mercantile product called “Pad Dope”. If you utilise this to the pad, it will soften it up and it will seal again. If a pad will not soften up, and does not seal, it is time to get it replaced. Although you may buy pads on your own, I would always commend a repair shop to change the pad for you. I worked in a shop for a summer, and know that it is not easy to do this work on your own. Your time is better expended practicing. If pads become sticky, you may use a product called “Magic gig dust”. Just squirt a little on the sticky pad and it will be solved. Another remedy is to take a dollar bill, fold it in half, and gently place it under the pad. Close the pad with some force, and speedily remove the dollar. The dollar will grab onto the dirt and pull it off of the pad. Usually this clears up the problem. Don’t use this technique on pads that are not leather e.g. clarinet, and flute.

To keep your pads sealing nicely, I commend KEY CLAMPS. These are little clamps that will press all of your keys down when you are not using the instrument. This ensures that when you put your sax away, the pads will arid in the rectify shape.

Always keep the end-plug in your saxophone when you put it in the case. This keeps the horn from moving around and bending keys. A word on the “fuzzy cleaner”. These cleaners look like a giant fuzzy Qtip. It goes into the saxophone and is designed to soak up the moisture. The problem is that the moisture stays in the cleaner and is left in your saxophone to go right back into the pads! If you have one of these- don’t use it! You may stick it in to swab out the moisture, but then you ought to always pull it back out! I personally think they leave little fuzzy things in the saxophone. Better not to use it at all.
