We all live with stuff, whether we like it or not, our homes are full of it. Although most rooms in our home have a sure level of clutter, the greatest “catch-all” room for most families is the garage. After all, isn’t that the perfective place to store not only rakes, hockey sticks, paint cans, broken toys and bicycles but likewise tennis rackets, luggage, empty boxes and possibly even a soccer ball or two? Now what with regards to the car? When’s the last time your car actually fit in there? Time to take the bull by the horns, let’s clean up your garage! It may seem daunting at first, but it’s actually a simple (though perhaps time-consuming) process. If you follow this simple guideline, you’ll be astonished at not only how much better your garage looks, but at all the space you didn’t recognise you had. First of all, get started by emptying everything onto your driveway or lawn. Do this by putting all similar items together. For example, develop piles for sports equipment, another for gardening implements, etc. Get rid of anything that’s broken or that you’re not using anymore. Concentrate only on reorganizing the items you want to keep. (Maybe now’s a good time to plan for a garage sale!) By taking inventory of everything you’re keeping you’ll have a good idea of how much storage you need; begin thinking with regards to where you want to place everything. Use stackable shelves for littler items, peg boards for tools and cabinets for larger items. When it comes to rakes, brooms, shovels and other such implements, use brackets or peg boards to hang them up. Same thing goes for extension cords, hang them up, they’ll be requiring little effort to get to, and won’t get tangled with each other. Use huge hooks on the ceiling to store bikes, wheel barrows and foldable lawn chairs in the winter. If your garage is hardly big sufficient for your car, consider buying a little shed for your yard where you may store all your tools and gardening equipment. Now, before you get started bringing items back into your garage, go through them thoroughly. Make sure that sports bags and any other material items are clean and aired out before being put away. Double check that all power tools are in working order, that shovels aren’t cracked, that brooms still have their bristles and so forth. Keep gasoline, kerosene and any other flammable items away from heaters and locked away from curious little hands. There you have it, a clean, coordinated garage! Going forward, undertake to keep away from using your garage as a “catch-all”, instead, listen to the old adage: A Place For Everything, Everything In Its Place. Live by this rule and your car will thank you.
