Some waterspouts get started out as tornadoes over land. Only when they move over a huge body of water are they called waterspouts. The second type of waterspout is formed over water and is the most common. Both of these have a similar structure with air moving upward quickly from the ground or ocean surface.

Although waterspouts are similar to tornadoes they do form in a dissimilar manner.

Stage 1-Formation of a dark spot on the water with rotating air moving upward. Many of these spots die out without turning into a waterspout.

Stage 2-Begins to take on spiral pattern of dark and lighter water.

Stage 3-As the wind speeds reach around 40 mph, the wind begins to kick up spray in a circular pattern called the “spray vortex”. When at this stage you may see the funnel pointing downward from the clouds toward the ring on the water surface.

Stage 4- The funnel reaches all the way from the cloud to the water surface. This funnel may appear transparent or light in color. Small waves are being kicked up and construct a bubbly wake as it moves all over the surface of the water.

Stage 5-The vortex weakens and the funnel becomes shorter and rope like. This dissipation ordinarily occurs when rain begins to fall from the parent cloud. Cooler air brought down by the rain cuts off the supply of warm, humid air that feeds the waterspout.

The necessary ingredients for a waterspout to form are exceedingly humid air with temperatures in the mid 80′s to 90′s. Heat causes the air to rise and as it does the humidity condenses into tiny water droplets that make up clouds. As the water vapor condenses it releases more heat that makes the air rise eve faster. Rising air currents are necessitated for both tornado and waterspout formation.

Although they may form over any huge body of water waterspouts occur most many times in the Florida Keys. Somewhere amid 400 to 500 per year. The Keys seem to have a regular east to northeast trade wind that blows systematically right down the islands. These winds aid to line up the clouds. Lines of clouds that are growing upward give hope or courage to waterspouts.

Most waterspouts in the Florida Keys occur amongst 11am to 1pm and amid 4 and 7pm.

This product is used by a music teacher and was commended to me. Buy this product to safely disinfect your wind instruments.

With all of the “bugs” going around, take this extra precaution when cleaning your instrument. Not much is necessitated and it is worth the effort.

Good luck and stay healthy!
