Saxophone Pads

Pad-Saver designed to gather any extra moisture left in the instrument after playing. Fits into the body of any alto sax while sitting in the case.

What saxophonist does not love that “kissing” sound when they let go of their keys? Here are my personal favored remedies to combating the stickiness.

#1 – The Good Old Washington Dollar

Or the Jefferson, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson, Grant, Franklin… depending on how lucky you feel. Open the key and place the dollar underneath the pad. Let the pad close and gently utilise pressure to the pad to make it close all the way. Pull the dollar bill out from underneath the pad tardily and carefully. This may be done multiple times.

#2 – Coffee Filters

Coffee filters have a great deal of uses other than for making coffee. Because of the little fibers in a coffee filter, they are often times more effective in grabbing onto atoms that are making the pad stick. Just as with the dollar place it under the pad and gently pull out. The fun (and often embarrassing) thing in regards to this is that you may genuinely see the residue a lot clearer with this kind of white surface!

#3 – Old English Oil

Yes, the wood cleaner. This is my bestloved remedy. Think with regards to it. It is a wood cleaner, so it is like a sealant. By applying this to your pads, it acts as a sealant and makes your pads like brand new. Take a cotton swab and dabble it with some cleaner. Swab the tone-hole (or the actual pad if it is genuinely bad) and then let it close. You ought to detect an instant difference. It may not be perfective but it will be gorgeous darn close.

#4 – WD-40

I swear I am not making this up. Just like the wood cleaner, WD-40 is a sealant and will work the same way as the wood cleaner. Again, just utilise numerous to a cotton swab and swab away. Just be careful not to get these merchandise all over your saxophone as it could harm the finish.

#5 – Replace the Darn Things

My saxophone pads once became so completely filled with liquid that they were just permanently damaged and it was no longer worth it to keep them around. I had to get them replaced. The “kissing” sound would come back within a day and it actually just was not working out for me (there were likewise other things that were wrong with a few pads but the “kissing” sound was what was genuinely bothering me). Sometimes fresh new pads are actually the way to go. The sound no longer haunts me. It is very necessary to take care of your pads straight from the beginning. Guard them with your life, and when in doubt, turn to the good Ol’ English.

1Holds moisture in – not what you want!
By orr333
We just brought my daughter’s sax in for new pads and tuning. The technician is an expert sax player and repair tech. He told us these do more harm than they are worth. You are better off running a swab through the horn to get the moisture out and then leave it open. These gather the moisture and hold it there versus the pads causing them to wear faster. He suggested just making your own swabs using pieces of old t-shirts.

1Do Not Use.
By Thundenlitenen
These things will rot out your pads. They tend to increase mold and hold moisture in the sax longer, wearing through pads quickly. They likewise leave fuzz in the pads. I used one for a short while and found that my pads were sticking all the time and rotting at an alarming rate. Few humans swear by them but I tend to swear at them. Not a good investment.
