Gastric banding is one of the few available surgical choices for treating morbid obesity. The Lap Band is a less invasive procedure than the gastric bypass and it is reversible. The surgical routine itself requires no stapling and no cutting. It is a surgery done beneath frequent anesthesia with the help of a laparoscope meaning that only a few incisions are made on the abdomen. While the routine the bariatric surgeon places a silicon band around the upper share of the stomach and fills it with saline solution, creating this way a little pouch. After that, a tube is connected from the device to a tiny access port, which is placed under the abdomen skin. If any adjustments are required after the surgery, those are done through this access port. There are two brands of gastric banding schemes approved by the FDA, the primary one the LAP-BANDĀ® was approved in 2001 and the REALIZEĀ® Band was approved in 2007. Gastric banding helps the patient to reduce the feed amount the stomach may bear. Restricting this way the calorie intake the patient gradually loses weight and with the right diet and physical exercises may maintain the weight loss. Like each other surgery gastric banding also rises some risks and concerns. Problems with the band might occur like band erosion, band leakage, band intolerance or band slippage. Port difficultnesses are possible as well, port flip, port leak or port dislocation. Physical sensations or changes a Lap Band patient might experience when complicatednesses occur are difficultnesses while swallowing, constipation, feed trapping, gallstones, nausea and vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux disease, indigestion, feed intolerance, infections. Candidates for gastric banding are those persons who requires medical care who have a BMI of 30 or dandier and who have formulated one or more obesity affiliated medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, heart conditions, sleep apnea, infertility (PCOS), type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, liver and gallbladder sickness and stroke. Before undergoing gastric banding it is good if the patient already tried conventional weight loss methods. Bariatric facilities commonly use a multidisciplinary team approach meaning that besides the surgeon and the nurses the bariatric team will also have a psychiatrist responsible for the patient’s aroused well-being, a physical therapist who will help the patient to build up a each and everyday procedure of aimed exercises, which will support the patient to maintain an active lifestyle and a nutritionist who will give the patient sure guidelines to follow with regards to eating habits. These lifestyle changes in a bariatric patient’s life need to be permanent. |
