Whether set along the picturesque coast of Norway or in it is remote mountains and forests, architect Wenche Selmer’s wooden cabins and houses blend without apparent effort into their surroundings. Combining local building traditions with progressed conveniences, her designs arouse Norway in all it is rugged beauty and smart Scandinavian pragmatism. Just looking at these cabins is an invitation to sit down at the lovingly designed dining table for a hearty meal, or to curl up with a book on one of the inviting corner sofas while enjoying the panoramic view through huge glass windows. These are houses that, while thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted, were meant basi and foremost to be lived in, and it is this accommodation of high design and livability that is partly responsible for their universal appeal.
Norwegian Wood is the basi book on the life and architecture of Wenche Selmer (19201998)one of the few women who gained prominence amid European architects in the mid-twentieth century. Fourteen of her gorgeous wooden cabins and houses are featured in elaborate descriptions, plans, and a wealth of archival images and newly commissioned color photography. Whether you’re planning to build your own vacation home, have always loved Scandinavian design or plainly get enjoyment from the warmth and sensuality of wooden architecture, you’ll find a great deal of inspiration here.
I had been thinking when it comes to altering my tenor sax for a while. I had purchased my bronze Yanagasawa T992 regarding five years ago after attempting all the professional level tenors on the market at the time. My Yanagasawa served me actually well. It went with me all through my music degree and a good deal of band performances spanning all the genres from jazz to an on tour rock and roll show. I now play (mainly tenor, but likewise baritone sax and flute) in one of the North East’s top function bands. Working with such a outstanding band of musicians I wanted to check the market again to make perfectly sure that my instrument was making the best possible sound.
When I need to exploration saxophones I visit the Sax Emporium, Newcastle upon Tyne. The proprietor, John Silvester has magnificent specialist cognition and there is always a good range of new and used instruments to try. I played all the professional level tenor saxophones new and used, including the latest Yanagasawa and Selmer models. Although the Mk6 and Reference 36 Selmer models and the Yanagasawa were good, the Selmer Reference 54 in truth stood out from the rest and far exceeded my expectations. I had no hesitation in going in front with a trade-in purchase.
Coincidentally, I had seen this precise sax being played on stage at the Sage, Gateshead only days before in the ‘Back to Basie’ big band. When I saw it close to and played it myself I without delay fell in love with it. The pretty yet strange ageold finish is so cleverly done, but most significantly the Reference 54 delivers a full strong fat sound at the lower end, it has fantastic key action and allows me to play sub-tones with a quality I had never been capable to achieve before. The precision of the sax’s action also decreases the likelihood of tuning issues at a gig. The band I work in has an exceedingly wide repertoire and requires me to play a range of timbres and harmonics to invent dissimilar moods. From deep creamy textures to rasping tones and seriously sounds this sax has it all and it is just outstanding to play on. Oh, and there’s a bonus – a outstanding case which even has a business card holder on the front!
If you may afford to make the investment, this tenor sax is a will have to to undertake for any professional.

A spectacular book when it comes to a spectacular architecht and her work By J. Wilton I am biased by the fact that I am so very fond of the work done by Wenche Selmer. That being said the author has done a spectacular occupation of showcasing Selmer’s accomplishments. Beautiful photographs abound and the text is rather substantive. My only complaint is that the floor plans that are included in general have no captions or notes and oftentimes no dimensions. Those floorplans that do have notes are in norwegian and as a result I expended a reasonable amount of time attempting to puzzle out where the photographs were taken relative to the layout of the respective buildings.

An extrodinary activity of formally presenting something of an extrordinary architect By David Hirzel The Norwegian contribution to mid century modern architecture is not well known – let along the contribution by a mid century woman architect. With beauteous color photographs, plans and construction details, this activity of formally presenting something of the work of Wenche Selmer is a visual treat and a learning experience. The collection of cabins and second homes provides an in depth look at the results of carefull attention to the details of a home environment. As we seek number of things from which only one can be chosen to big and over the top houses, the book is a must for any individual who wishes for the beauty of simplicity and anybody mesmerized in wood architecture.
