I had been thinking with regards to altering my tenor sax for a while. I had purchased my bronze Yanagasawa T992 when it comes to five years ago after attempting all the professional level tenors on the market at the time. My Yanagasawa served me in truth well. It went with me all through my music degree and a great deal of band performances spanning all the genres from jazz to an on tour rock and roll show. I now play (mainly tenor, but likewise baritone sax and flute) in one of the North East’s top function bands. Working with such a outstanding band of musicians I wanted to check the market again to make utterly sure that my instrument was making the best possible sound.

When I need to exploration saxophones I visit the Sax Emporium, Newcastle upon Tyne. The proprietor, John Silvester has splendid specialist cognition and there is always a good range of new and used instruments to try. I played all the professional level tenor saxophones new and used, including the latest Yanagasawa and Selmer models. Although the Mk6 and Reference 36 Selmer models and the Yanagasawa were good, the Selmer Reference 54 in truth stood out from the rest and far exceeded my expectations. I had no hesitation in going in front with a trade-in purchase.

Coincidentally, I had seen this precise sax being played on stage at the Sage, Gateshead only days before in the ‘Back to Basie’ huge band. When I saw it close to and played it myself I without delay fell in love with it. The pretty yet strange oldfashioned finish is so cleverly done, but most significantly the Reference 54 delivers a full strong fat sound at the lower end, it has fantastic key action and allows me to play sub-tones with a quality I had never been capable to achieve before. The precision of the sax’s action likewise decreases the likelihood of tuning issues at a gig. The band I work in has an exceedingly wide repertoire and requires me to play a range of timbres and harmonics to create dissimilar moods. From deep creamy textures to rasping tones and seriously sounds this sax has it all and it is just outstanding to play on. Oh, and there’s a bonus – a outstanding case which even has a business card holder on the front!

If you may afford to make the investment, this tenor sax is a will have to to try for any professional.

5Great For The Money
By Retro Guy
My experience with horns goes back to public school days. I would rate this saxophone as better than most. I would tell potential buyers not to be wary of an instrument at this price. It plays actually well in as much as it is comparitvely easy to put air through it. I am using a 1 1/2 Rico reed with the mouthpiece that came with it and get a good sound. If, like me, you are getting back into playing after a long hiatus give this horn a shot firstborn before buying something more expensive. For someone to rag on this instrument they would have to have very unrealistic expected values for the price paid.

4It is good but…

We found this product at Amazon.com after looking at various music web sites. The major reasons for my son to pick this one are the price and color. My son’s teacher said it is quality is good. However there is no manual, warranty, or any written document inside the case, and the quality of the case makes us believe that it will not protect the instrument.

We have contacted the vendor by mail and phone for the document. The response is quick but not very helpful and friendly.

2Pretty isn’t enough
By Audiophile
As a musician who has played other instruments before, I wanted something not too costly but somewhat above a student model. The instrument arrived on time (I purchased the red lacquer one) and in a lovely box, but:

1) There is an instruction manual that does not even specify that you ought to moisten the reed, nor tells you to take off the ligature and reed and how to position them back on. If you’re going to bother putting in an instruction manual, at least make sure that includes how to assemble the sax, you will have to at least have all the steps there.

2) The bottom screw of the ligature would not move, we tried respective mediums on it to get it to move and I was almost tempted to use pliers but was frighted of detrimental it beyond repair and that I wouldn’t be capable to get a refund.

3) Upon closer examination and exploration after attempting to find answers to my problems, I realize that there are numerous complaints online when it comes to Cecilio saxophones with the lacquer chipping off and the instrument itself not even being serviced by music fix shops since they don’t want to be kept liable for these things.

Just a heap of thoughts. It was rather a gorgeous sax, but if you’re like me and at least wanted to keep it around for awhile, you might be better off renting or saving up for a nicer sax.
