About the AuthorBrian McCarty is a Memphis-born photographer presently living and working in Los Angeles.  Not what I was expecting, in a good way

I thought that this was going to be a book when it comes to the Art-Toy scene and artists, but it’s so much better than that. Rather than numerous catalog of toys and wordy text, the book is filled with terrifically narrative photos that say more when it comes to the architect toy motion than a 1000 essays could. The photographer isn’t so much documenting the scene as much as building upon it, yet the history and conceptual explanations are all there. The captions at the end are more like diary entries that not only explain the nuts-and-bolts procedure of making the photos, but also what it was like to collaborate with the artists behind the toys. McCarty is like Robert Frank with the Beats, altho rather of hanging out and sharing inspiration with Kerouac and Ginsberg, he’s chilling with Biskup and Baseman, Ryden and Visell. There’s not one thing else like this, and it speaks to precisely what is happening now in the art world. The preface by Rushkoff also needs mention and praise. As a relative outside to the scene, he was competent to articulate the relevance of the architect toy scene better than I’ve ever read. Just an overall astounding book and collection of work.

Art-Toys is a outstanding coffee-table book. McCarthy’s work is very recognizable and my guess is galore people are fans and don’t even know it. The book is filled with outstanding pictures and his concepts/setups are second to none. Some pages are blank, keeping just the name of the picture on the opposite page, so I do wish there were more pictures or more detail. I wish he’d portion more of his methods ore stories around each shot in those blanks spaces. On the other hand, the visual representation is clean, professional… arty. If you like art toys or photography, this is a outstanding choice, and an sheer must-have for any fans of McCarthy’s work.

Brilliant!!!

This is so much more than yet another book on architect toys!! It’s collection of brilliant work that stands wholly on it is own. The photographs are visually stunning, thought provoking, and relevant. McCarty has formulated his own genre of work that is distinctive and different from anything else that I’ve seen. The book itself is simple and refined and tasteful in it is layout, and the behind the scenes section at the end adds so much. Reading his thought routine and seeing the methods behind the photos makes me want to look through them again and again. I find something new each time.
