About the AuthorMichael Hamilton self publishes these great productions through MoCroi, Incorporated. Michael Hamilton grew up in Philadelphia. As a boy, his father loved to take him and his brothers and sisters on hikes through the local park, where they would often times listen a solitary piper playing in the distance – the strains of a tune drifting downwind through the trees. Some of Michael’s basi memories are of his Scottish Grandfather who, while living with Michael’s family, enjoyed telling him stories of Jack and the Beanstalk and other classic, Scottish fairy tales. He also had a Scottish neighbor who played the Great Highland Pipes and was many times heard piping in the evening. Michael’s childhood was filled with the haunting sounds of the pipes and stories from Scotland and Ireland. Celtic music always reminds him of these happy memories and his strong family roots. Today, Michael self publishes his sheet music and instruction books through MoCroi, Incorporated. A bagpipe chanter is the portion of the bagpipe that formulates the melody. It is normally a narrow, conical tube that has a series of little holes. These holes are alternately covered and uncovered to control the pitch developed by the chanter. At the top of the bagpipe chanter is the reed.
Bagpipe chanters commonly consist of two main divisions: the parallel and non-parallel bored. The former allows the bagpipe to create a sweet tone while the latter allows for the control of volume in bagpipes.
Wood or resin?
Wooden chanters are made of solid, lasting wood such as African Blackwood, Cocobola, or Rosewood. They ordinarily come in the key of concert pitch D and the key of B and are normally tuned to the key of A in 440 Hz. Most wooden chanters have keyblocks for adding brass keys and mounts commonly made of maple wood or synthetic ivory.
Meanwhile, a resin bagpipe chanter is made from lasting resin and comes in the key of concert pitch D and the key of B. They are normally tuned to the key of A in 440 Hz. Resin chanters are idealisti for both beginners and progressed players.
For beginners
Practice chanters are primarily employed for exercise in Great Highland Bagpipes. It is littler than the typical bagpipe chanter and has a top piece that may be blown directly from the mouth. It is in general used by beginners so that they do not have to master the mechanics of controlling the bag. Practice chanters are commonly made of hard wood or plastic.
Tips
When buying bagpipe chanters, look for those that have a blowpipe made of plastic. Plastic blowpipes are sturdier and do not crack easily. Also, plastics are not vulnerable to uttermost moisture and temperature changes that may cause blowpipes to crack.
